Ortlieb Panniers

OVERVIEW

Ortlieb’s touring panniers can basically be sorted into two different styles: the packer and the roller. The major difference between the two is the Packer line uses a double drawstring snow flap to synch the top closed with a waterproof lid that covers it. The roller (as you might have guessed) is rolled shut and kept that way with plastic snaps down the sides. Both lines feature Ortliebs fantastic mounting system that snaps in tight but is removed with a simple lift on the bag’s handle. Both styles also come in a minimalist “Classic” model as well as a “Plus” model that sports a few extra features. These bags will keep your things dry in the heaviest of rains, won’t tear at the seams, and are the most popular pannier with bicycle tourists for good reason.

BIKE PACKER CLASSIC (large) and SPORT PACKER CLASSIC (small)

These packs have a waxier appearance than their “plus” counterparts. With no exterior pockets, the bags are essentially like a waterproof grocery bag. They do have a mesh pocket on the inside suitable for keeping pens, key, or maps separated and easier to access. All Ortlieb panniers haveĀ  rubber feet on the bottom to prevent tearing from dragging it across concrete or any other abuse you might put it through. For a waterproof bag, these are remarkable durable. However, like most materials, a slashes from a rock shards or pieces of metal will undoubtedly lead to a tear. As mentioned before, these bags synch shut with a double drawstring snow flap which is then covered by a waterproof lid.

BIKE PACKER PLUS (large) and SPORT PACKER PLUS (small)

The general shape, drawstring, rubber feet, and mounting systems are the same as the Classic line. The only major differences are the Plus series uses a material that has a matte aesthetic (which does not affect how waterproof it is), and exterior pocket, and a strap that synches around the side of the bag. The extra outside pocket is great for storing sunscreen, keys, wallet, or whatever you like. The pocket has a draw-strap that runs under the lip of the lid. This can be a helpful feature if you like to tighten your bag down from the side much like modern backpacking straps would, securing your bag’s contents snugly. If you tour with a handlebar bag, you may not need the extra pockets. If you don’t, the extra pockets could save you a lot of time rummaging for your lip balm or wallet.

BACK ROLLER CLASSIC (large) and FRONT ROLLER CLASSIC (small)

Like the Packer Classic line, the Roller Classics sport the more waxy looking material. These bags also include the rubber footings and an interior mesh pocket on all the other panniers. A minimalists choice. Pack it and roll it shut. Enough said.

BACK ROLLER (large) and FRONT ROLLER (small) PLUS

The Roller Plus line is basically the same as the Roller Classic except for the material used. The plus line sports the matte finished material which looks sexier and it more supple to work with… or so I’ve heard. Haha…
