Big Sur – A Fitting Finale

After a month of double bacon cheeseburger binges, dodging logging trucks, battling headwinds, and living off of my bike, the adventure has come to a close. There is no better place on the West Coast to end this trip than Big Sur. With steep winding roads, no bike lane, dramatic vistas, and beautiful blue water, [...]

The Smell of Adventure

Road Cologne is a place for tall tales and anything that makes you stink good. This is meant to be a home for stories about the best burgers we've ever had, how not to get eaten by wolves while riding your bike through the Yukon, how to keep dry in a torrential downpour bike ride, how to win a fist fight with a drunk Alaskan fisherman, the most creative "shower" you've ever taken, how to cook nachos on your engine block while driving across the country, and any tribulations worth smiling about while adventuring. We hope these stories inspire you to share yours with us and remind us all to laugh harder and risk more!

Ferry Island Hopping

One of my favorite parts of the trip so far is when I get to stop pedaling for an hour or so, load my bike onto a ferry, and take a nap in the sun on the deck of the ship. The views of the steep, snow covered mountains remind me of the Norwegian fjords. [...]

Sleep Walking - Vancouver, BC

Vancouver!!!

After a brief stay with my good friend in Seattle, I waddled back on the train for Vancouver. Since I would be arriving around noon, my plan was to drag all my stuff outside the train station and start putting it together. Apparently I hadn’t spent enough time in train stations to understand that this [...]

Train Ride - Somewhere, Washington

Train Rides, Starting Gates, and Roller Coasters

Riding the train was like a roller coaster that climbs for thirty hours before your first decent. As romantic and scenic as the ride was, it ended just soon enough. My mind was already on the long road ahead of me. This is probably my favorite pictures from the ride. More soon…

Railroad Sunrise

Being 6’3″ has many advantages: reaching the cookies; being spotted in Asia; being able to ride all the rides at amusement parks… but there is a cost. While the Amtrak coach seats are far superior to airplanes or even many European lines I’ve ridden, there’s nothing quite like spending the night playing a one man [...]

All Aboard!

After the unveiling of the monster pizza oven last month, there has been a constant barrage of house guests, family visits, pizza parties, and bake-offs. As a result, I weigh more than I ever have. I also managed to leave all my packing and bike-boxing for today… the day I leave for two months. Hardly [...]

Canada Bound!

Going back about a year, I hurt my back so badly I was unable to walk for over a month. While I was laying on the floor looking for patterns in the spackle above me, I decided I was going to ride my bike from Canada to Mexico. Call me stubborn, call me creative, call [...]
